Every Great Trip Starts with a Plan

Some travelers know exactly where they want to go. Others know they want to travel but are not sure where to begin.

Our role is helping travelers organize destinations, flights, hotels, points, miles, budgets, and itineraries into a travel plan that fits their goals.

Whether you are planning an anniversary trip, family vacation, retirement adventure, bucket-list journey, or a simple weekend getaway, thoughtful planning can make the difference between a stressful trip and a memorable experience.

Travel planning is not about creating the perfect itinerary. It is about creating a trip that matches your goals, interests, budget, travel style, and available time.

What We Help With

Destinations & Route Planning

Choosing where to go is often easier than deciding how to connect everything together. We help travelers evaluate destinations, routing options, trip pacing, and transportation choices to create a travel experience that makes sense from start to finish.

Flight & Hotel Strategy

Flights and hotels are often the largest travel expenses. We help travelers evaluate options based on location, convenience, comfort, value, loyalty benefits, and overall trip goals. For more focused help, see our Flight Planning Assistance and Hotel Planning Assistance pages.

Points, Miles & Cash Options

A frequently asked question among travelers is whether to use points or pay cash. Our Card Planning and award travel guidance can help travelers better understand which rewards fit the trip they actually want to take. The optimal choice varies based on the specific trip circumstances. We assist travelers in assessing available options and comprehending the associated tradeoffs.

Travel Tools & Resources

Many travelers enjoy planning their own trips. We provide tools, templates, and resources that help organize reservations, schedules, budgets, and important travel details.

Itinerary Planning & Trip Flow

A successful trip is not about doing more. It is about doing the right things.

We help travelers think through travel days, sightseeing, transportation, day trips, rest days, and overall pacing so they can build an itinerary that fits their goals and travel style.

Rather than booking reservations on your behalf, our focus is helping you evaluate options, understand tradeoffs, and learn how to research and book the choices that work best for your trip.

Our goal is not to create dependency. It is to give travelers the knowledge, tools, and confidence to make informed travel decisions on their own.

The result is a trip that feels enjoyable, organized, and personalized, not rushed or overwhelming.

Personalized Guidance

Every traveler is different. Our recommendations are based on your goals, interests, travel style, budget, and priorities, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Real Planning Examples

The best way to understand our planning philosophy is to look at real trips.

The examples below demonstrate how thoughtful planning, smart use of travel rewards, and clear travel goals can create memorable experiences. You can also read more examples in our 48th Anniversary Europe story, our 50th Anniversary Europe planning story, and our Banff family travel rewards example.

A 48th Anniversary Journey Through Europe

For our 48th wedding anniversary, we designed a trip focused on meaningful experiences rather than simply checking destinations off a list. You can read the full story here: Our 48th Anniversary in Europe: London, Bruges, Paris.

The journey combined iconic cities, walkable neighborhoods, local markets, memorable restaurants, comfortable hotels, and a special anniversary celebration in Paris.

One of the most memorable planning decisions involved Bruges. Originally, we planned to travel directly from London to Paris. After my wife saw Bruges featured on television and said, "I want to go there," we redesigned the itinerary to include a two-night stay in one of Europe's most charming small cities. It ultimately became one of our favorite stops of the entire trip.

Planning considerations included:

  • Multi-city routing across three countries
  • Balancing major cities with smaller destinations
  • Hotel selection based on location and experience
  • Train connections between destinations
  • Strategic use of hotel points and free night certificates
  • Building an itinerary with a comfortable pace rather than rushing between attractions

The result was a journey filled with memorable experiences, meaningful moments, and unexpected discoveries.

This trip reinforced one of our core beliefs: the best travel plans begin with the experiences you want to have. Points, miles, and rewards can help make those experiences possible, but the memories are what travelers remember long after the trip is over.

A 50th Anniversary Dream Trip Built with Transfer Partners

To celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, we designed a European journey that combined meaningful destinations, memorable hotels, scenic train travel, and strategic use of travel rewards. That full planning example is detailed in Using Transfer Partners and Hotel Points to Book a 50th Anniversary Dream Trip to Europe.

The trip demonstrated how thoughtful planning and travel rewards can work together to create extraordinary experiences without paying entirely cash rates for every component of the journey.

Planning considerations included:

  • Coordinating multiple destinations across Europe
  • Selecting hotels based on location, experience, and value
  • Using transfer partners for airline awards
  • Combining multiple hotel loyalty programs
  • Balancing special anniversary experiences with practical travel decisions
  • Booking key reservations well in advance

The result was a trip that celebrated an important milestone while showing how points, miles, and transfer partners can support travel goals when used strategically.

The lesson was simple:

Travel rewards are most powerful when they support a meaningful trip—not when they become the reason for the trip.

Why Travel Goals Matter More Than Points

Many travelers begin by asking:

“What is the best travel credit card?”

We believe a better question is:

“Where do you want to go?”

Travel goals should drive travel strategy, not the other way around. We explain this more fully in How Travel Goals Shaped Our Points Strategy.

Different travel goals require different approaches. A family vacation may prioritize hotel savings. An anniversary trip may prioritize comfort and location. A bucket-list journey may focus on premium flights or unique experiences.

Points, miles, hotel programs, and travel rewards are simply tools. The goal is to create experiences and memories that matter.

When travelers start with their goals first, better planning decisions usually follow.

Our Planning Philosophy

The best travel plans are not built around points.

They are built around experiences.

Points, miles, hotel programs, free night certificates, and credit card rewards are simply tools that can help travelers reach those experiences more affordably.

Our planning philosophy is straightforward:

  • Start with the trip
  • Define what success looks like
  • Build a strategy around your goals
  • Use points where they create meaningful value
  • Focus on experiences rather than maximizing every redemption

A great trip is not measured by cents-per-point calculations.

It is measured by the memories you create.
