One of the biggest lessons we learned during our week in the Canadian Rockies was that even the best itinerary should remain flexible. Wildfire smoke, weather, staffing issues, and unexpected discoveries all have the potential to reshape a day's plans. Rather than fighting those changes, we learned to embrace them.

Looking back, Day 2 became one of the highlights of our vacation because almost nothing unfolded exactly as we originally expected—and every change somehow made the day better.
The previous evening, smoke had hidden much of the scenery around Golden. Opening the curtains the next morning was an enormous relief. The mountains were crystal clear, the Air Quality Index had dropped to about 5, and the excitement returned instantly.
Having recently visited Vail, Aspen, Jackson Hole, and Switzerland, we wondered if the Canadian Rockies could really live up to their reputation. By the end of this day we already had our answer.
Three Bucket-List Experiences

With the skies finally clear, we reshuffled our priorities and committed to three experiences we had been looking forward to since planning the trip: Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, a scenic drive to Rogers Pass through Glacier National Park, and an evening at the Golden Skybridge.
Months of planning had taught me that flexibility often produces a better trip than rigidly following an itinerary.
Kicking Horse Mountain Resort
One reason we chose to spend two nights in Golden instead of driving straight to Banff was to enjoy Kicking Horse Mountain Resort without feeling rushed. That decision paid off immediately.

Parking is directly beside the resort village and gondola station, making the walk from the car only a couple of minutes. We arrived shortly before 10:00 a.m. and found plenty of parking with almost no crowds.
Earlier that morning I had purchased our Senior Sightseeing Gondola tickets online after checking the weather forecast. In hindsight, it really wasn't necessary.
There was only a small line for guests purchasing tickets while I simply scanned my phone and received our wristbands. Unless you're visiting during a holiday weekend, I would not worry about buying days in advance.

Arrival: 10:00 a.m.
Parking: Free, adjacent to gondola
Ticket Purchased: Senior Sightseeing Gondola
Price Paid: CA$62 per person (July 2026)
Time Spent: About 3 hours
Would We Return? Absolutely

We chose not to add the Grizzly Bear Refuge option. The additional cost was only about CA$10 per senior ticket, so price wasn't the deciding factor. We simply enjoy seeing wildlife in its natural habitat whenever possible.
Visitors hoping to see the resident grizzly may make a different choice, but for us the mountain scenery was the priority.
The gondola ride was smooth and the views were spectacular, and we got a gondola to ourselves.
One unexpected highlight was watching mountain bikers of every age repeatedly ride the gondola before descending trails ranging from beginner routes to expert downhill courses. It became entertainment in itself.

Our original lunch plan was Eagle's Eye Restaurant. Unfortunately the outdoor patio was closed because of staffing shortages.
We still bought coffee inside and stepped onto the patio to enjoy the panoramic views before riding back down.
That small change led us to Peaks Grill where we enjoyed a broader menu, reasonable prices, and beautiful views of the gondola.
Sometimes Plan B really is better than Plan A.

Instead of treating the restaurant change as a disappointment, we simply enjoyed the new plan.
We still had mountain views, a comfortable patio, a good meal, and nowhere we needed to rush.
A Scenic Drive to Rogers Pass
The afternoon reinforced why Golden was such a smart base.

Rogers Pass is only about 58 kilometres from Golden, while making the same excursion from Banff would require roughly 220 kilometres and well over four hours of round-trip driving.
Although the Visitor Centre was under construction, Parks Canada had excellent temporary exhibits and knowledgeable staff.
The drive itself was peaceful, scenic, and far less crowded than we expected.

Standing in the parking area, surrounded by towering peaks, it was easy to appreciate why this landscape challenged surveyors and engineers nearly 150 years ago.
Even with the Visitor Centre under construction, Parks Canada had created excellent temporary exhibits, a gift shop, and an information tent staffed by enthusiastic interpreters.
We spent time asking about the glaciers visible from the parking area and learned that some of the largest viewpoints were another 45 minutes west. Since we already had a full Icefields Parkway day planned, we decided to save that adventure for a future trip.

There was no feeling that we had cut the afternoon short. The scenery we had already seen made the drive completely worthwhile.
Knowing that we had another major glacier experience planned later in the vacation also made it easy to turn around without trying to squeeze one more destination into the day.

The Visitor Centre made a natural turnaround point for our scenic drive west from Golden.
There was plenty to see, knowledgeable staff available to answer questions, and dramatic mountain scenery in every direction.
Why Rogers Pass Matters

Rogers Pass is far more than a scenic stop.
Discovered in 1881 by Major A.B. Rogers, the pass became the critical route that allowed the Canadian Pacific Railway to cross the Selkirk Mountains, helping connect eastern and western Canada.
Today the corridor carries both the Trans-Canada Highway and railway through one of the most avalanche-prone regions in North America, protected by an extensive system of avalanche sheds and control programs.
It was designated a National Historic Site because of its importance to Canada's transportation history.

Golden Skybridge
After a quick recovery break in the hotel's hot tub, we headed to the Golden Skybridge .

Since it was our last evening in Golden, I waited until the afternoon to purchase tickets after confirming the weather forecast. The attraction's flexible cancellation policy made that an easy decision.
We arrived around 5:00 p.m. to find the parking lot only half full.
After signing liability waivers at one of many self-service iPads, we scanned our tickets, received wristbands, and were walking toward the bridges within minutes.
The entrance village itself was impressive, with food, restrooms, shaded seating, excellent signage, and a bandstand where free live music was playing.

Visited: July 25, 2026
Arrival: 5:00 p.m.
Parking: Free
Ticket Purchased: Bridge Pass
Price Paid: About CA$50 per person (July 2026)
Walking: Approx. 3 km (1.8 miles)
Time Spent: About 2½ hours
Would We Return? Yes

One thing I had underestimated while planning was the amount of walking.
The attraction is much more than two suspension bridges.
After crossing the upper bridge you continue around a forest loop with viewing platforms, moderate hills, several stair sections, and an adventure area featuring a mountain coaster, zip lines, canyon swing, climbing attractions, and children's play areas before returning across the lower bridge.
The additional walking actually improved the experience because every few minutes revealed another breathtaking view of the canyon.

The bridges were exactly what we had hoped they would be: high enough to feel adventurous, but comfortable enough that we could slow down and actually enjoy the scenery.
Dark clouds eventually rolled in and staff began warning visitors about approaching lightning, so we left just ahead of the storm.
Walking Reality: Golden Skybridge
Plan for more walking than the name suggests.
The attraction involved approximately 3 km (1.8 miles) of walking during our visit, including moderate hills, stair sections, viewing areas, forest paths, and both suspension bridges.
For travelers with walking limitations, this is worth factoring into the day's plans before visiting.
The Best Wrong Turn
On the drive to dinner I accidentally made a wrong turn that added nearly ten miles to our route.
Instead of frustration, we were rewarded with one of our favorite memories of the trip.
A group of roughly eight bighorn sheep stood calmly on the rocky hillside beside the road.
There was nowhere safe to stop for photographs, but it hardly mattered.
It was Leslie's first time seeing wild bighorn sheep, and watching her excitement was worth far more than any picture.
Dinner and a Sweet Ending
Rain arrived just as we reached Island Restaurant.
Inside we shared a delicious chipotle chicken pizza, enjoyed what became our favorite Caesar salad of the trip, and relaxed over drinks while reflecting on another wonderful day.
Before returning to the hotel we crossed the street to Dairy Queen for our first chocolate-dipped vanilla cones of the year.
Every bite was worth the calories and it was the perfect ending to a remarkable day.
Cost & Value
Both attractions represented excellent value in our opinion.
The Senior Sightseeing Gondola at Kicking Horse cost CA$62 per person, while the Golden Skybridge Bridge Pass was about CA$50 per person.
Considering the quality of the experiences, the time we spent at each attraction, and how both compared with similar mountain attractions we have enjoyed elsewhere, we thought both were well worth the cost.
Meals at Peaks Grill and Island Restaurant were also noticeably less expensive than comparable restaurants in Chicago and significantly less expensive than similar destinations in Switzerland.
If We Did It Again...
We wouldn't change much.
We'd stay in Golden again, arrive early at Kicking Horse, skip purchasing gondola tickets days in advance, wait until the day of our Skybridge visit before buying tickets after checking the weather, and absolutely include Rogers Pass.
We might even keep the wrong turn if it meant Leslie could experience her first wild bighorn sheep sighting all over again.
Sometimes the best travel memories come from embracing the unexpected rather than following a perfect plan.
