Luxury tents at Finch Hattons in Tsavo West National Park, Kenya

Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp served as our home for five unforgettable nights in Tsavo West.

Some trips change the way you think about what is possible with points and miles. For my husband and me, a five-night stay at Finch Hattons Luxury Safari Camp in Kenya proved that an extraordinary all-inclusive African safari could be within reach through a thoughtful award-travel strategy.

We are recent empty nesters who have been passionate points-and-miles travelers since 2018. Our greatest joy is combining award travel with wildlife photography and seeking out destinations where we can experience birds, animals, and the natural world up close. Points and miles have helped take us to Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Bora Bora, South America, several European countries, and two unforgettable African safaris.

Our Journey to Kenya

Why We Chose Finch Hattons

Lobby at Finch Hattons luxury safari lodge in Kenya
The welcoming lodge blends luxury with authentic safari design.

This was our second African safari, and we carried forward many lessons from our first adventure. We wanted an experience that combined exceptional wildlife viewing, beautiful accommodations, photography opportunities, and a quieter atmosphere.

Finch Hattons immediately stood out. Located in Tsavo West National Park, the camp offered a landscape and atmosphere that felt distinctly different from the Masai Mara. The setting is greener and more varied, with hills, natural springs, lava fields, abundant birdlife, and Mount Kilimanjaro visible in the distance when conditions cooperate.

The property is intimate, with only 17 luxury tented suites. That small size became one of the defining features of our stay. We never felt as though we were part of a large resort operation, and our game drives rarely involved the vehicle congestion that can occur in more heavily visited safari areas.

Booking Finch Hattons With Virgin Red Points

The trip became possible through a valuable combination of a promotional award rate and an American Express transfer bonus.

Finch Hattons was available through Virgin Red for as little as 110,000 points per night during the promotion we used. At the same time, American Express Membership Rewards was offering a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin.

We transferred 425,000 Membership Rewards points, which provided the Virgin points needed for our five-night stay. With the promotional rate and transfer bonus working together, it felt as though we were spending roughly 80,000 Membership Rewards points per night for an all-inclusive luxury safari with two guided game drives each day.

Important: Award pricing, promotional offers, transfer bonuses, inclusions, and booking procedures can change. Confirm current terms with Virgin Red and Finch Hattons before transferring points. Transfers are generally irreversible.

This is exactly why a broader credit card and points strategy matters. Transferable points become especially powerful when travelers can combine them with a limited-time bonus and a specific award opportunity instead of transferring speculatively.

The Booking Process Required Patience

Booking the stay was not as easy as selecting dates online and clicking a button.

We first called Virgin to verify that our preferred dates were available. We then emailed to confirm our intention to reserve and provided our Virgin Red account information, names for each guest, birthdates, passport details, and personal contact information.

There was a considerable amount of back-and-forth communication before we finally received confirmation that the points had been deducted and the reservation was complete. The entire process took about two weeks.

It felt unusually complicated at the time, but the final experience made the effort worthwhile. The lesson is simple: verify availability before transferring points, expect the reservation process to take time, and keep careful records of every email and confirmation.

Getting to Tsavo West

Regional safari aircraft used to fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Tsavo West
A short regional flight made reaching the lodge quick and scenic.

We booked our flights from Washington, D.C., to Nairobi using Alaska Mileage Plan miles and flew Qatar Airways in economy. Business class would have been wonderful, but we did not have enough miles for two premium-cabin seats. Economy got us there, and that was what mattered.

After arriving in Nairobi, we spent one night at the Weston Hotel for approximately $140. The hotel was conveniently located across from Wilson Airport, the regional airport used by many safari flights.

We then paid approximately $350 per person for the round-trip regional flight. The flight to Tsavo West took about 50 minutes, and the airstrip was only around ten minutes from Finch Hattons. That short final transfer was a welcome benefit after the long journey to Kenya.

Complex international and regional routings are a good example of where thoughtful flight planning can improve the entire trip—not merely the long-haul ticket.

First Impressions of Finch Hattons

Comfortable gathering spaces overlook the surrounding wilderness.

From the moment we arrived, the property exceeded our expectations. Finch Hattons feels refined and elegant, but it remains connected to the surrounding landscape. Open-air gathering spaces, natural materials, comfortable seating, and views into the bush create an atmosphere that is luxurious without feeling detached from the safari experience.

The staff welcomed us warmly and quickly made us feel like family. That feeling continued throughout the stay. Our guide was outstanding, the lodge team anticipated our needs, and the personal service made the experience feel intimate rather than formal.

Because the camp is small, it never felt crowded. Quiet time between activities was genuinely peaceful, and simply watching the landscape from the lodge became part of the experience.

Inside Our Luxury Tent

Luxury tent suite at Finch Hattons in Tsavo West
Our spacious luxury tent featured elegant furnishings and incredible views.

Calling the accommodations “tents” does not fully describe them. Each suite is approximately 1,000 square feet and feels far more like a private luxury villa.

Our tent included a king-size bed, chandelier, elegant furnishings, a copper soaking tub, indoor and outdoor showers, and generous space to relax. It offered all the comforts we would expect from a high-end resort while still preserving the feeling of sleeping within the African wilderness.

Private deck overlooking the African savannah
Every morning began with peaceful views from our private deck.

The private deck became one of our favorite places. We could sit quietly, look across the landscape, listen to birds, and watch for wildlife without leaving our accommodations.

Daily laundry was also included, which was incredibly helpful on a safari. With dusty game drives and limited luggage space on regional aircraft, complimentary laundry made packing lighter much easier.

Twice-Daily Game Drives and Unforgettable Wildlife

Twice-daily game drives were one of the highlights of our stay.

Every morning and afternoon, we headed out with our guide for approximately two hours of wildlife viewing and photography.

Our guide was exceptional. He understood animal behavior, knew where to look, and helped position the vehicle for photography while remaining respectful of the wildlife. His knowledge transformed each drive from simple sightseeing into a much deeper experience.

During our stay, we saw elephants, lions, Cape buffalo, a black mamba, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, monkeys, and many other animals. Wildlife was not limited to the game drives. Giraffes, zebras, hippos, and monkeys could also appear near the camp and around our tent.

A giraffe, spotted hyena, black rhino, and young lion were among the remarkable animals photographed during our Tsavo West game drives.

Every drive felt different. Sometimes the excitement came from spotting one of Africa's most famous animals. At other times it came from watching behavior, listening to our guide explain the ecosystem, or simply photographing an animal in beautiful light.

The lack of crowds made the experience even more rewarding. We often saw only vehicles from our own lodge, giving us time to observe and photograph wildlife without feeling rushed or surrounded.

For wildlife photographers, that sense of space is invaluable. Instead of competing with a line of safari vehicles for the same viewpoint, we could focus on the animals, the setting, and the moment.

A Paradise for Birders and Wildlife Photographers

More than fifty bird species make Finch Hattons a paradise for bird photographers.

Finch Hattons is home to more than 50 species of birds, making the property a destination in its own right for birders and photographers.

Some of our favorite photographs came not from dramatic big-game encounters but from quiet moments watching colorful birds around the camp. Birdlife was everywhere, and there were photography opportunities throughout the day—not only during the scheduled drives.

Birdlife proved every bit as exciting as the larger wildlife.

For travelers who enjoy both wildlife and bird photography, this combination makes Finch Hattons especially compelling. There is always something to observe, even during the quieter hours between activities.

Dining, Mocktails, and Resort Amenities

Fine dining meal served at Finch Hattons
Every meal combined gourmet cuisine with exceptional presentation.

The dining experience was another major highlight. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were beautifully prepared and typically included three or four courses served on white tablecloths with fine china.

We are a non-alcoholic family, and the staff created a wonderful variety of mocktails for us. We also enjoyed a complimentary sundowner, one of those classic safari moments when guests pause to watch the light change across the landscape.

Between game drives, guests can enjoy the pool, spa, yoga, guided nature walks, and other activities. There was far more available than we could fit into one stay, but the schedule never felt pressured. We could be active or simply relax and enjoy the setting.

The Costs First-Time Safari Travelers May Overlook

One expense that often surprises first-time visitors is the national park entrance fee. During our trip, the Tsavo West fee was $90 per person, per day. For five days and two people, that added $900 to our travel costs.

The resort sent us a payment link before arrival, so paying was straightforward. Still, this was a meaningful expense that needed to be included in the budget even though the lodge itself was booked with points.

Planning note: Park fees and policies can change. Review current conservation fees directly with the Kenya Wildlife Service and confirm what is or is not included in your lodge reservation.

Tipping is another important consideration. At all-inclusive safari lodges, guides and lodge staff generally appreciate gratuities. Recommended amounts vary, so travelers should ask the lodge for current guidance and budget accordingly.

Practical Lessons From Two African Safaris

Bring newer U.S. currency

Guides and lodge staff often appreciate tips in U.S. dollars, but older bills may not be accepted. We were advised to carry bills printed in 2009 or later.

Expect limited restroom access during game drives

One practical detail that is not discussed often enough is that restroom facilities may be unavailable during long drives. Travelers should be prepared for the possibility of a quick “bush stop.” Your guide will know when and where it is safe to stop and will help make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Pack lightly when laundry is included

Regional safari aircraft may impose luggage restrictions. Complimentary daily laundry made it possible for us to pack less and reuse comfortable safari clothing throughout the stay.

Confirm every inclusion before departure

An all-inclusive rate may include meals, activities, and transfers while excluding park fees, gratuities, or regional flights. Ask for a written list of inclusions and additional costs before finalizing the trip.

How Finch Hattons Compared With Our Masai Mara Safari

We previously stayed at JW Marriott Masai Mara, and both experiences were outstanding. Finch Hattons was not necessarily better or worse—it was wonderfully different.

The most noticeable difference was the absence of crowds. In Tsavo West, we generally encountered only guests from our own camp during game drives. That made wildlife viewing feel more private and helped create better conditions for photography.

The landscape also felt distinctly different. Tsavo West was more lush and varied, with hills, volcanic lava, natural springs, and a dramatic mountain backdrop.

Mount Kilimanjaro viewed from Finch Hattons in Tsavo West National Park, Kenya
On clear mornings, Mount Kilimanjaro creates an unforgettable backdrop from Finch Hattons.

Seeing Mount Kilimanjaro from our tent added a sense of place that is difficult to describe. It was not simply a beautiful hotel view. It was a reminder that we were staying within one of the world's most remarkable natural landscapes.

Travelers deciding between safari regions should not assume every African safari offers the same environment. Wildlife density, scenery, crowd levels, lodge style, and accessibility can create very different experiences.

Would We Return to Finch Hattons?

Without hesitation.

Finch Hattons combined luxury accommodations, exceptional service, gourmet meals, memorable wildlife encounters, abundant birdlife, and a peaceful setting into one extraordinary experience.

Using points and miles has taken us far beyond what we once thought was financially possible. This redemption was especially meaningful because it did not simply reduce the cost of a hotel room—it opened the door to an all-inclusive safari experience that became one of our favorite trips.

If you enjoy wildlife, photography, birding, distinctive landscapes, and intimate luxury properties, Finch Hattons deserves serious consideration. Be prepared for a booking process that may require patience, budget carefully for the expenses not covered by points, and leave room in your schedule to appreciate the camp itself.

For us, the combination of Tsavo West's quiet wilderness and Finch Hattons' hospitality made the long journey completely worthwhile.
